KERSHAW COUNTY (WACH) -- U.S. Senator Jim DeMint campaigned over barbecue and sweet tea Thursday.

DeMint joined state Senator Mick Mulvaney for a campaign stop at the Old South Barbecue Restaurant in Kershaw County.

DeMint faces surprise Democratic nominee Alvin Greene in the upcoming November election.

When asked about his opponent, Senator DeMint declined comment.

"I'm not going to comment about my competitors in this race, because my biggest opponents are in Washington and in Congress and the White House," he said.  "I'm going to run my campaign the same way no matter who runs against me back here."

Aside from Greene, DeMint faces third party candidate Tom Clements in the November election.
