MYRTLE BEACH (AP) -- The South Carolina Transportation Department is selling state memorial plaques to cut down on distracting homemade memorials for victims of traffic accidents.
But the Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports Monday you may not see them for awhile because homemade tributes are still allowed.
The newspaper reports West Virginia began offering the state signs two years ago but only 22 have been approved. West Virginia still allows homemade memorials.
Back in 1997, Florida approved the signs while banning homemade memorials. Now there are thousands of state-provided signs along Florida highways.
The South Carolina transportation agency began taking applications for the new $250 signs on its Web site Monday. The signs will stay on the roadside for two years.
