Columbia (WACH) -- Many people are preparing to put on their shopping shoes, as the tax-free weekend quickly approaches.
Starting August 6th and running through August 8th, shoppers will be exempt from state and local taxes as they shop for school items.
But some people have more than just back-to-school supplies on their list.
On Friday people will be lining up to take advantage of the tax-free weekend. South Carolina shoppers will save on local and sales tax for items like notebooks, highlighters, backpacks and pens. It's an opportunity for parents like Kenneth and Rosellen Brown to bag some great deals.
"It helps when you don't have to pay the extra tax on top of the school items," said Rosellen.
But things could soon change. According to recent reports, the South Carolina Tax Realignment Commission is advising lawmakers to narrow the definition of school supplies for the tax holiday. That means items on the tax-free exempt list could be on the chopping block. It's something that doesn't sit well with Rosellen.
"Tax free items would help everybody being the fact that there are some people that don't have jobs that would help tremendously," said Rosellen.
However, some agree with the commission and say the tax-free weekend should stick to the basics.
"The purpose for this was for it to make it easier to buy back to school items," said Kenneth. "And if that was the intent and the purpose of the whole program then that's what it should be."
