COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- State auditors have agreed to review spending by South Carolina State University on a transportation research center.

Multiple media outlets reported the Legislative Audit Council voted Wednesday to review what happened to millions of dollars planned for the James E. Clyburn Transportation Center at the Orangeburg school.

Several lawmakers asked for the audit after The Post and Courier of Charleston reported school finance officials could not account for millions in state and federal money for the center.

The school announced plans in 1998 for an $80 million center to conduct research and train workers in the transportation industry. Officials said last week they would begin construction on a building for the center.

School president George Cooper says the university will cooperate with the audit.
