COLUMBIA (WACH) - Many states are spending big bucks on signs, showing where stimulus cash is being spent. South Carolina used only thirty seven hundred dollars on fourteen signs.
“I think it’s the fiscal thing to do the responsible thing to do with the stimulus funds,” says Ron Patton with the South Carolina Department Of Transportation.
Patton says his agency talked about making recovery act signs but officials saw better opportunities to use the stimulus cash.
“Our goal was to make sure the public knew what we were doing with press releases when the commission approved a new batch, we didn't feel it was best use of funds to spend a lot of money on signs,” adds Patton.
The 14-Million dollar project in Lexington County is your stimulus money at work but while you won't see any signs telling you that when you pass by, officials say that’s how they can get you the biggest bang for your buck.
“Nothing wrong with spending more money in those states they choose to do that but we were trying to put our money on the pavement, on the pipe and on the projects,” adds Patton.
SCDOT officials say many midlands projects are funded by stimulus bucks including the work on North Main Street and they add, a lot of the funds have gone to resurfacing roads, and bridge and highway repairs.
