(AP) -- CONWAY, S.C. A South Carolina Highway Patrol officer has been arrested on a drug charge in Horry County.

Multiple media outlets report 42-year-old Lance Cpl. Bobby Lee Spurgeon was charged Friday with manufacturing, distribution or possession of drugs.

Horry County police refused to release details about Spurgeon's arrest, saying it was part of an ongoing drug investigation.

Public Safety Department spokesman Sid Gaulden says Spurgeon has been fired and the Highway Patrol is cooperating in the investigation.

Spurgeon was released from jail Saturday. A phone listing for him could not be found and it wasn't clear if he had an attorney
