CAYCE (WACH) -- Two suspects have been charged with child neglect after allegedly leaving their young children alone for seven hours.

The Cayce Department of Public Safety responded to 1808 Helen Street after getting a call of a three and four-year-old wandering outside unsupervised.  Officials say the children were covered in dirt and urine.

When the two guardians, 41-year-old Rebecca Lynn Coleman of Cayce and 47-year-old Jeffrey Edward Nance of North, were located, authorities say they appeared to be impaired.

Officers tried several times to wake them up.  Once awake, one admitted to taking prescription drugs.

The children were placed under Emergency Protective Custody and then later turned over to the Department of Social Services.
