RICHLAND COUNTY (WACH) -- The Richland County Planning Commission heard concerns when it comes to a change in the law on where college dorms can be located.
Benedict College wants to use a former hotel located seven miles from campus as housing for nearly 250,000 students.
Thursday, one by one, neighbors living in the Springwood Lake Community voiced their concerns.
Some residents say hundreds of college students could become a neighborhood nuisance.
"We think a dormitory in our community would lesson the property value, would create some safety problems," explains resident Nathaniel Roberson. "The conduct of the students, irrespectable of how Benedict plans to try and control it, can not be controlled because it has never been controlled."
The planning commission voted unanimously to deny the dorm Thursday.
The recommendation now moves on to the Richland County Council for consideration.
