HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) -- An unusually hot June has brought some manatees swimming of the coast of the South Carolina Lowcountry.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports several people have spotted the creatures who are also known as sea cows in the past month off Hilton Head Island.

Wildlife experts say manatees follow warm water, and occasionally show up off the South Carolina coast any time from the late spring through October.

Department of Natural Resources officials warn boaters to watch for manatees and ask people to not spray the animals with fresh water. The manatees like it, but it makes them more likely to get close to docks and boats, where they can be struck by propellers.
