COLUMBIA-- South Carolinians will be hitting the water and roadways in big numbers this July Fourth weekend. So are law enforcement officers.

Officials will be out in full force, making sure everyone has a safe holiday.

The Department of Natural Resources and the South Carolina Highway Patrol have teamed up for the "100 Deadly Days of Summer" campaign. The annual campaign runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

Sgt. Wes Potter with DNR says, "We'll be conducting random safety checks on the water. We're looking for life jackets, registrations, and to make sure people aren't drunk."

State Troopers are doing the same. Officials say if people are drunk on the water, they'll also be drunk on the roadways.

Officers hope with the extra patrols out this holiday weekend, people can enjoy Independence Day, then make it home safe.
