MANNING (AP) -- Investigators say a South Carolina county employee cleaning out her office before she retired has been viciously beaten by an intruder.

Multiple media outlets reported that Manning police said Clarendon County Council administrative clerk Betty Pritchard spent most of Sunday boxing up her office because her last day is Wednesday.

Authorities say Pritchard called her husband around midnight to say she was coming home, but someone attacked her as she walked to her car.

Investigators say Pritchard's arm was broken and she lost the tip of a finger in the attack, but managed to make it back to her office and lock the door before she passed out. She called 911 when she awoke about four hours later.

Police don't yet have a suspect.
