COLUMBIA (AP) -- It's the South Carolina Senate's turn to decide the fate of technical schools, public libraries, health programs and other items Gov. Mark Sanford cut from the budget.
Senators will take up 56 vetoes Thursday that the House overturned during an overnight debate.
A two-thirds vote from the Senate will spare agencies and programs from the budget ax. Those decisions include money to run the state's technical schools, operate the state health and environmental agency, and keep school buses on the road.
The Senate can't do anything about the 51 vetoes upheld by the House. That cut roughly $50 million from the state's nearly $21 billion spending plan. The House also agreed to eliminate the entire, $214 million section to be paid with money that still needs congressional approval.
