COLUMBIA (AP) -- A state lawmaker wants South Carolina state police to investigate how the unemployed winner of the state's Democratic U.S. Senate primary paid his filing fee.

Republican Rep. Chip Limehouse says in a letter sent Tuesday to the State Law Enforcement Division he has questions about how Alvin Greene came up with the more than $10,000 needed to file as a U.S. Senate candidate.

Greene is represented by a public defender on a felony obscenity charge. Limehouse says Greene may owe the government money if it's proven he didn't need a publicly paid lawyer.

Greene has said he saved up for two years to pay the candidate fee.
