CHARLESTON (AP) -- The two candidates in the Republican runoff for South Carolina's coastal 1st District seat are debating over which of them is the career politician.
Paul Thurmond said during a debate Tuesday on WCSC-TV in Charleston that opponent Tim Scott ran two years ago for the state legislature, then announced he was running for lieutenant governor before entering the congressional race.
Thurmond called Scott "the epitome of a career politician."
Scott responded that Thurmond was hypocritical because he announced last year he was retiring from Charleston County Council to spend time with his family but then entered the congressional race.
The two are seeking the GOP nomination for the seat held by the retiring Henry Brown.
