ORANGEBURG (WACH) -- After less than two years on the job, the president of South Carolina State University is out.

Tuesday, the university released a statement saying the board of trustees voted to not renew the contract of Dr. George Cooper, a former deputy administrator with the U.S. Agriculture Department.

Coopers contract will end on June 30.

According to the university, the board voted John Smalls to handle the day to day operations until an interim president is named.

The university did not give a reason for Cooper's firing.  Cooper's lawyer says he's considering legal action.

Board chairman Jonathan Pinson voted against the firing and said two of the board members who voted to fire Cooper will leave the board July 1.
