Vets say keep pets indoors in extreme heat.
COLUMBIA -- Temperatures in some parts of the Midlands reaching triple digits Sunday.
Dr. Tracy Duffner with the South Carolina Veterinary Emergency Care says oppressive heat can be dangerous to pets.
She points out that dogs are more at risk for heat stroke than cast, so you shouldn’t leave man’s best friend outside for too long. If your pet shows signs of heat stroke, Duffner recommends to get it into the shade immediately.
“At that point the best thing is to lay towels over the anima and cool them with tepid water,” says Duffner. “You never want to do an ice bath or very cold water because that will make the situation worse.”
According to Duffner, a dog or cat’s internal organs can be permanently damaged if the animal is exposed to the heat for too long.
