NEWBERRY, S.C. (AP) -- A 19-year-old white South Carolina man has made his first court appearance after being charged in the shooting death of a black man whose body was dragged for 10 miles behind a truck.
Newberry County Magistrate Ron Halfacre says Gregory Collins of Newberry appeared in court Thursday, but no bond was set. Collins is charged with murder in the death of 30-year-old Anthony Hill of Winnsboro on Wednesday.
State Law Enforcement Division director Reggie Lloyd says the FBI is assisting in the investigation as a possible hate crime. Lloyd says investigators don't have a motive yet.
Sheriff's deputies say they followed a trail of blood to Collins' home, but he refused to come out until officers used tear gas.
Collins doesn't have a lawyer yet.
