LEE COUNTY -- The race to replace Lee County's former top cop is underway.

Tuesday was the final day candidates looking to become the new sheriff could file.

A federal grand jury indicted former Sheriff E.J. Melvin on federal drug charges.

Melvin stopped down as sheriff last month.

The county's interim sheriff says the department is still recovering.

"These officers are hard working officers," explains Interim Sheriff Daniel Simon.  "They held their head up and did their job.  They should be commended for what they had to go through.  They actually had to take some tough blows from the community, but they kept keeping on."

Five candidates are vycing to become Lee County's sheriff.

The special election is set for July.
