COLUMBIA -- The city of Columbia's public pools opened this weekend.
If you plan to use them to keep cool in the heat, lifeguards offer some helpful advice.
They say you should never leave kids unsupervised near a pool.
Also, don't consider kids drown-proof just because they've had swimming lessons.
And when at the pool, know where the nearest life-saving rescue equipment is located.
Lifeguards say even though pool rules and tips are common knowledge, they're easily forgotten during the winter months.
"No running is a big one, no diving in the shallow end," explains Lifeguard Spencer Brayton. "Here, we don't allow people to swim in the deep end just because people are diving off the diving board."
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death to kids nationwide.
