COLUMBIA -- Providence Hospital is hoping to help young athletes by checking out their heart health.

The five to ten minute test checks for an inherited condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or HCM.

One in five hundred people have the condition.

The test won't detect all heart problems, but Dr. Robert Malanuk says it's still important to have your kids screened.

"It still remains the number one cause of death among athletes so we are interested in promoting awareness of it and help people identify the symptoms of it," Malanuk explains.

Symptoms include shortness of breath, extreme chest discomfort and passing out.

The first screening is Thursday from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. at Providence Hospital Northeast.

There will also be screenings on June 1 and 7.  The cost is $50.

Call 1-877-256-5381 to register ahead of time.
