COLUMBIA -- One Midlands group has reached a finish line Friday.

You may remember the Palmetto Half Marathon that we sponsored last month, or at least remember WACH Fox's own Adam Pinkser running in it.

The event allowed participants to run or walk for a good cause.

Friday, one of those good causes saw the last stretch of the fundraising as the Alston Wilkes Society received a check for over $7,000 towards their Columbia Veteran's Home .

Representatives of the shelter think it shows how, even in tough economic times, Midlands residents still care for those who served their country.

"It just helps build morale and help the guys know that people out there still care about them," says Clinton Davis of the Alston Wilkes Society.

"There's so many good people in this state and in the city of Columbia that are willing to go out and help," adds Anne Walker.  "If people will let folks know what the needs are, they're willing to get out there, and in this case, they had a good time doing it."

The money donated will be used to fund projects to help improve the lives of homeless veterans.  The Alston Wilkes Society was one of four charities that the Palmetto Half Marathon helped this year.
