COLUMBIA (AP) -- South Carolina is the latest state to take regulatory action against individuals and companies the Insurance Department says are involved in a multistate insurance fraud.

A cease-and-desist order naming 19 respondents was issued on Wednesday by state Insurance Commissioner Scott Richardson.

It stems from allegations that respondents sold millions in phony medical insurance policies. The Insurance Department says 16 other states have taken regulatory action.

Last month, a Tennessee judge liquidated two companies alleged to have been involved.

One of the respondents in the Wednesday order is identified as William Worthy II of Isle of Palms. Worthy did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.
