COLUMBIA -- Monday is Confederate Memorial Day.
The holiday is celebrated by South Carolinians and other southern states.
A group of people gather at the Statehouse grounds in order to pay tribute.
Organizers say they are honoring all soldiers, both black and white, who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
"We stand guard at the memorial every Confederate Memorial Day as a way to honor our ancestors," Robert Spigner of the Sons of Confederate Veterans says.
Spigner says the group wants South Carolinians to appreciate the state's history and learn more about those who came before us.
All state offices were closed in observance of Confederate Memorial Day.
Seven states officially recognize the holiday.
