(AP) -- U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters tells graduates of a historically black college in South Carolina they will need to use the same perseverance that got them through school to find a job in the sluggish economy.

Waters spoke Saturday to about 170 graduates of Benedict College in Columbia.

The Los Angeles-area congresswoman said she thinks the economy is on the mend, though South Carolina's jobless rate ranks among the nation's worst. She says new graduates will find work even if it's not their dream job.

Waters said the graduates send a message that young black people are committed to education and contributing to society. And that can be inspiring to schoolchildren who can see possibilities for their own lives.
