WACH Fox News is in Mobile, Alabama keeping you up to date on the impact the oil spill could have for both the Gulf and in the Palmetto State.
DAUPHIN ISLAND, AL -- Crews are still busy trying to clean-up the massive oil spill and cap the leak at the bottom of the Gulf.
WACH Fox News is in Mobile, Alabama to bring you the latest on the race to get the coast ready for landfall of the oil and the potential human impact it could have.
The work is tedious and difficult, but absolutely necessary on Dolphin Island.
The military is putting up barriers on the beach to stop the potential flow of oil.
The situation is troubling to longtime visitors like Irene Kinderis, who for years have marveled at the beauty of the beaches.
"What might happen to our estuaries and to our fish life and our shrimp is very sad," Kinderis says.
The possibility of devastation along the beach is even more disturbing to homeowners like Richard Schmohl.
He lost his home to Hurricane Katrina and just rebuilt two years ago.
And now, trouble is lurking again.
"We're feeling right now, maybe this thing won't come to Dolphin Island and that's our prayer," he says. "But if it does, and they shut us down, then they'll close down the west end of the island."
Schmohl hopes the earthen barriers being built around hundreds of beachfront homes will keep him and many others from experiencing the worst case scenario.
"And even with our entry passes, we won't be able to come down because it'll be an environmental hazard at that time and they will evacuate the west end due to the toxicity and so forth, so it'll be years before that'll be cleaned up."
We'll continue our coverage from the Alabama shore and the oil spill's impact on South Carolina and how it affects you. Keep checking back to WACH Fox News and MidlandsConnect.com for more.
