A new mobile mammography van is traveling around the Midlands. The 43-foot van is decked out with hardwood floors, plasma TV's and dressing rooms. But it's not your typical RV, because it's designed to help save lives.
"There would be no excuse for not having got this when it comes right to your place of work," said cancer patient Emily York.
Last month a mammography van rolled up to York's job and forever changed her life. The state-of-the-art mobile unit offers state-of-the-art services in detecting breast cancer.
"They found it so small because of this mammogram van," said York. "It wasn't detectable by touch, so this is just really a lifesaver," said York.
"We're here to detect it early and provide the service for women in our community," said Lexington Medical Center supervisor Frankie Haygood.
She knows women often lead busy lives.
"They take care of their family, the husband, the children," said Haygood. "They make sure they get all the medical care they need, and we're here for them to get the services they need."
And for York, a mother of two, she's used to going full speed ahead. But she says slowing down for a moment equipped her to take on the fight of her life.
"It was very simple," said York. "They ran right on time, and it was literally 15 minutes."
"The new mammography van is driven by technology, that's bringing breast cancer screening services to the door steps of women all across the Midlands.
"It's not painful, it doesn't take long, they talk you through it," said York. "They're very gentle with you. There's just no reason every woman should not get a mammogram."
