COLUMBIA -- The city of Columbia could soon be asking residents to shell out more cash.
Council members discussed a potential property tax hike at Wednesday morning's meeting.
The money the increase could bring in would go to replacing an aging fleet of fire, police and garbage trucks.
City Manager Steve Gantt tells WACH Fox News most council members want to find an alternative solution to balance the budget, but the possibility of raising taxes is still on the table.
"You have to bite the bullet one time, but you did it, and that's done," Gantt explains. "And that's something else you don't have to worry about on an annual basis, and then you can spend your time on things that we can have an impact on."
Gantt says the council is now reviewing other options to avoid raising taxes and will discuss the alternatives next week.
Under the increase, if you're home is worth $100,000 you would see an approximate $15 increase.
If you own a business worth that much, your taxes would go up $23.
