SUMTER (AP) -- A South Carolina man has been sentenced to 27 years in prison after being convicted in a shooting death last year.

The Item of Sumter reported that a jury returned a voluntary manslaughter conviction against 28-year-old Jeron Alondo Cook of Sumter on Wednesday.

Cook had been charged with murder in the March 2009 shooting death of 24-year-old William IKeem Blackwell of Sumter. Cook also was convicted of illegal possession of weapons.

He apologized before he was sentenced.
