CHARLESTON (AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard says a boater has reported seeing three whale calves in one of the busier ship channels in South Carolina.

Coast Guard Chief Gary Herman says someone on a sailboat spotted the whales around 9 a.m. Monday in the Cooper River downstream from the Ravenel Bridge in Charleston.

The Coast Guard issued a bulletin on the sighting, but officials haven't confirmed the report.

Herman says the boater thought the calves were right whales. Experts estimate there are just a few hundred of the North American variety of the 40-ton mammals left.
