COLUMBIA (AP) -- It's Earth Week, and one group is offering South Carolina motorists cash for those old car and boat batteries.

AAA Carolinas is giving $1 for each used battery during Earth Week, which starts Sunday.

AAA has collected over 77,000 batteries during Earth Week nationwide since 2001, more than 5,000 of those coming from North and South Carolina.

Organizers encourage people to recycle batteries to help keep the chemicals inside them out of the ground and waterways. AAA says more than 100 million lead-acid batteries are sold nationally each year, and many are illegally disposed of in dumps or near water sources.
