Relief may be in store for those suffering from the chronic disease.

COLUMBIA -- In South Carolina, more than a half million people have kidney disease.

But relief may be in store for those suffering from the chronic disease.

A new therapy program is in effect, which allows dialysis patients to treat themselves with their own equipment in the comforts of their home.

"This is something that is necessary to sustain life, so we want them to do it in an environment that they're comfortable because it's something they'll do for the rest of their lives," says Tikie Briggs, Home Therapy Program Manager.

"It doesn't limit you to stuff because you do it while you're sleeping," adds dialysis patient Annie Lyles.

The special dialysis machines are paid for by insurance companies.
