COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Men in South Carolina's capital city are invited to walk one mile in women's high heel shoes to raise awareness about sexual violence.
Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands is hosting the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event Wednesday in Columbia.
Formerly named the Rape Crisis Network, the nonprofit provides free services to victims of sexual assault, including counseling, a 24-hour hotline and an advocate to accompany the victim to the hospital and court.
Organizers say the goal is to raise public awareness about sexual assault and rape, and to education people on how to prevent it. They say the walk offers an opportunity for men to get involved in the effort.
The event is held during Sexual Assault Awareness Month nationally.
