A swimming pool problem in Forest Acres has some residents outraged. They say a neglected pool is a breeding ground for snakes and mosquitoes; and some worry it's a hazard for neighborhood children. Tuesday night Forest Acres officials gave the green light on a proposal that could make neighborhood nuisances a thing of the past.
Forest Acres native Tommy Kahaly loves spending time outside perfecting his lawn. So when nearby neighbors neglect their private space, it doesn't sit well.
"People can't just sit there and leave their properties there to decay," said Kahaly.
The Forest Acres City Council agreed, and on Tuesday night they gave the initial approval to a measure that could control problem properties.
"We're just hoping to get this neighborhood issue resolved as quickly as we can, without inconveniencing anybody," said Forest Acres City official Shaun Greenwood.
If the proposed ordinance is given the final green light, the murky water in one local swimming pool would have to be drained or the homeowner would face possible fines. Forest Acres Councilman Shell Suber says the city is focused on maintaining its historic beauty.
"Keep and maintain the condition of our city and the condition of the houses," said Suber.
"Hopefully if this passes, then more things can be done to hopefully beautify the neighborhood and to keep an eye-sore from getting worse," said Kahaly.
Kahaly also hopes the city's latest move is the first step to greater accountability.
