COLUMBIA -- Last week was a busy week for the Riverbanks Zoo.

Because of spring break and nice weather, over 63,000 visitors walked through the gates.

That breaks the previous record that was set the same week in 2002 by more than 11,000 visitors.

Because of the high turnout, traffic was often seen backed up on I-126.

“This record-breaking attendance emphasizes the fact that Riverbanks is South Carolina’s largest attraction,” said Satch Krantz, executive director of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. “More importantly, many of the guests that visited the park were tourists who came from out of town and out of state and as a result contributed to our local economy.”

Despite the high traffic to the facility, officials say things went off without a hitch.
