MARION (AP) -- Gov. Mark Sanford visited the South Carolina county with the state's highest unemployment rate but where several hundred new jobs have recently been announced.
The governor on Tuesday visited Marion County, where the jobless rate is 22.7 percent.
Sanford met privately for about 30 minutes with Rodney Berry, the executive director of the Marion County Economic Development Commission. He said the two wanted to talk about recent investments and where the state may be able to help existing businesses expand.
In recent months, more than 560 jobs have been announced in the county. Berry says it's the result of people sharing a common vision.
During the past decade, a Russell Stover Candies factory closed and put 836 people out of work. That was followed by textile plant closings.
