GREENVILLE (AP) -- A 72-year-old South Carolina man who had just been released from the hospital after suffering a possible stroke died in a fire that destroyed a Pickens County mobile home.

Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley said Melvin Pope Isbell was found dead after firefighters put out the blaze that started about 1:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Isbell's son, William Sparrow, told WYFF-TV he woke up and escaped through a window with his two teenage sons.

Sparrow says he went around to the front door and heard his father scream for help before the roof collapsed.

Sparrow says his father was sleeping on the couch after he was released from a local hospital where he was treated for stroke symptoms.

An autopsy was set for later Tuesday.
