GREENWOOD (AP) -- The man on South Carolina's death row longer than any of its current inmates has been re-sentenced to life in prison.

Defense attorney Diana Holt says 51-year-old Edward Lee Elmore was re-sentenced Thursday at a hearing in Greenwood.

Elmore has been on death row since his 1982 conviction for the murder of Dorothy Edwards. The 75-year-widow had been stabbed 52 times when she was found in her Greenwood home.

A judge ruled in February that Elmore cannot be executed because he is mentally retarded. The U.S. Supreme Court banned the death penalty for mentally retarded offenders in 2002.

Elmore was still listed Friday as housed on Lieber Correctional Institution's death row. Officials say he will be moved after they receive an official notice from the court.
