COLUMBIA (AP) -- The South Carolina Legislature's only doctor has been charged with failing to file income tax returns on time.

The state Revenue Department announced the arrest Thursday of Rep. Kris Crawford of Florence.

The 40-year-old Republican is charged with failing to file individual income taxes when due for tax years 2004 to 2007, and failing to file corporate income taxes for his medical company for tax years 2005 to 2007.

Crawford says the missed deadlines were because of his former accountant and he has since paid all his taxes.

Crawford says he turned himself in on the misdemeanor charges. He was booked and released less than an hour later from the Florence County jail.

Crawford could face seven years in prison if convicted. He has no opponent in the June primary.
