COLUMBIA (AP) -- Candidates vying to be South Carolina's next governor and state schools superintendent will be taking questions from teachers at a convention.

The executive director of the Palmetto Teachers Association said the candidates will present their ideas to about 150 teachers at the advocacy group's annual convention on Saturday in Lexington. The professional association has about 6,300 members statewide.

Kathy Maness said Tuesday the candidates will speak between six and 10 minutes each, followed by a question-and-answer session with each set of candidates.

Maness said teachers need an opportunity to hear the candidates' ideas on their profession, considering the continued budget cuts to education that have led to layoffs and furloughs and sapped teacher morale.
