CHARLESTON (AP) -- Dozens of scholars from across the nation are gathering in South Carolina for a conference on life after slavery in the American South.

The conference at the College of Charleston opens on Thursday and continues through Saturday. It deals with race, labor and politics in the South in the years after the end of the Civil War.

Topics include everything from how former slaves acquired property to the new religious and political communities that formed in the years after emancipation.

There are also sessions on racial violence and how the era is interpreted by scholars from outside the South.
