COLUMBIA -- The Riverbanks Zoo's is welcoming its newest member to the family.

The new unnamed giraffe comes to the zoo weighing in at 112 pounds and standing five feet seven inches tall.

Zookeepers were greeted by the baby giraffe when they entered the mother's pen on February 13, which you may remember was the day the Midlands was hit by a winter storm.  But the weather didn't discourage the newborn's arrival.

Officials at the zoo expect the bundle of joy to grow to be 10 feet in one year eventually reaching an estimated 18 feet by adulthood.

This latest birth makes a total of seven giraffes in the herd.

"It's awesome, we were really excited," says Senior Keeper Andrea Mueller.  "We are having a very successful breeding program and we are really excited for the new addition."

And you can get in on the naming process.  The zoo is auctioning off the naming rights for the baby giraffe to the highest bidder.

Visit the Riverbanks Zoo's website for more information.
