The previous clerk resigned due to drug and theft charges.
SPARTANBURG -- Gov. Mark Sanford has appointed a new clerk of court in a South Carolina county to replace one who resigned as he faced charges he stole and sold drugs from an evidence lockup.
Sanford on Friday named Hope Blackley to the Spartanburg County post, replacing Marcus Kitchens.
Kitchens resigned last month following his arrest after making a $3,000 payment to a man he thought would find a buyer for the drugs. He also faces federal charges for stealing the drugs.
Blackley lives in Boiling Springs near the county seat of Spartanburg and works on Sanford's staff as the state's crime victim ombudsman.
Sanford said Blackley is a reformer who will make sure incidents like the one involving Kitchens don't happen again.
