Snow is falling in Downtown Columbia at the time of this update and schools have called to tell us they are delaying classes Wednesday.

Up to an inch will accumulate on non-roadway surfaces for the central and southern Midlands with more possible in some isolated areas.  Snowfall totals are greater in Saluda, Lexington, Newberry, Fairfield and Kershaw counties.

But the main concern for motorists is the black ice that has the potential to freeze on bridges and overpasses.  The other concern is snow accumulation on dirt roads.

Officials are asking those who do venture out onto the roads to use extreme caution, reduce speeds, and not to use any sudden breaking or speed changes.

The NWS has added Aiken, Lexington, Richland and Sumter to the counties already under Winter Weather Advisories until 5:00 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued Winter Weather Advisories for Saluda, Newberry, Fairfield and Kershaw counties.

Flakes are flying from Saluda to Lexington county.  Viewers in Saluda county say they've seen at least one inch of accumulation in the town of Saluda.  Folks living just outside of the town say totals are slightly less.  Snow is accumulating on grassy surfaces and roadways in that county.  One gas station reported close to two inches on grassy surfaces and automobiles.

Viewers in Newberry county reported a light coating on non-roadway surfaces.  Residents in western Lexington county are reporting wet snow, but with no accumulation.  We're seeing a changeover occurring near the Columbia Metro Airport as well.

"I've been making phone calls to viewers all over the area, and I'm impressed with what folks are seeing," says SkyWACH Weather Anchor Justin Kier.  "Saluda county has seen the most with some roadway accumulation."

Black ice will be the main concern across the area, but it should be relegated to secondary roads, overpasses and bridges.

Most of the Midlands will see snow, but most will not amount to roadway accumulation across the central and southern Midlands.  The best chances for accumulation will be in Saluda, Newberry, Fairfield and Kershaw counties.
