MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- An Allstate spokesman says the company will no longer insure mobile homes along the South Carolina coast.

Shane Robinson told The Sun News of Myrtle Beach for a story Saturday that about 2,400 existing customer policies in Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Georgetown, Horry and Jasper counties won't be renewed.

Those areas are most likely to get high winds from hurricanes and Robinson says mobile homes tend to have more damage in a storm than other structures. Robinson said American Modern Insurance Group likely will offer coverage to many of the mobile home customers.

South Carolina Insurance Department spokeswoman Ann Roberson said recent laws have been passed to encourage insurers to offer affordable coverage especially along the coast.
