MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) -- An important link between the sea islands and the South Carolina mainland is open again to traffic.
Officials say traffic began moving over the Ben Sawyer Bridge linking Mount Pleasant and Sullivans Island early Friday.
The bridge had been closed while the old swing bridge was replaced with a new 640-ton swing span. The opening concludes the $31 million bridge replacement project.
The old span was probably best known for the pictures transmitted around the world showing it wrenched at a 45-degree angle after Hurricane Hugo stormed ashore with 135 mph winds in 1989.
