COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus gave the local chapter of the American Red Cross a $5,000 donation for the Haitian relief efforts.
J. David Weeks, the chairman of the caucus, said the group created the South Carolina Haiti Earthquake Recovery Fund to help the ongoing efforts to rebuild the devasted country.
"It feels really good," said Weeks. "We're not talking about a political purpose, we're talking about helping people and that is what the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus is all about."
Libby Anne Inabinet accepted the check on behalf of the Red Cross on Thursday. She said these funds are essential to the organizations work in the country.
"We are here 365 days a year, 24 hours a day to not only help those victims in Haiti, but the ones right here in South Carolina," said Inabinet. "The cold temperatures have caused an increase in house fires, so it's important for people to remember the need right here in our state."
