COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina Natural Resources Department has closed a public boat ramp in Kershaw County because of flooding on the Wateree River.

The launch is located where U.S. Highway 1 crosses the river.

Natural Resources Capt. William Poole says standing water is blocking access to the parking area and the boat launch downstream from the dam that creates Lake Wateree.

Agency climatologist Mark Malsick says a series of heavy rains going back to the third week in January has filled many of the state's manmade lakes to their highest levels.

Malsick says the forecast projects more rain for the area this week.
