CHARLESTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama's budget proposal includes $18.5 million in U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects for South Carolina's coastal area for the next year.
Charleston District Engineer Lt. Col. Jason Kirk says the projects include nearly $10 million for dredging and maintaining the Charleston Harbor as well as more than $6 million for the St. Stephen power plant. The plant supplies energy for 30,000 homes in the Santee Cooper power grid.
Kirk says the proposal also includes about $320,000 for surveys and environmental compliance activities with the Georgetown Harbor project and $114,000 for a study involving Edisto Island storm damage reduction.
The proposal covers the 2011 fiscal year, which begins in October. The plan needs congressional approval.
