COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) -- Winter weather is moving through the Midlands of South Carolina.
The SkyWACH Weather Team reported that precipitation fell across the center part of the state during the morning on Saturday. Temperatures hovered barely above freezing at that time, and now cooler conditions arrived during the afternoon hours.
SkyWACH Weather Anchor Tim Miller reports that South Carolina Department of Transportation crews are scattered throughout the state, especially near the Piedmont and Charlotte areas, to help work on roads covered in snow. They are pretreating roads in Richland and Kershaw counties, including bridges, to help avoid headaches with icing roads. Crews are saying that most of the roads are wet but not icy.
"The main concern will be the threat of black ice later Saturday night, which is nearly impossible to see," says SkyWACH Weather Anchor Justin Kier. "If you don't have to get outside Saturday night, it's recommended that you stay inside."
SkyWACH Weather Anchor Jonathan Oh forecasts colder temperatures for Saturday night. "We're expecting lows to fall to the lower 20s, which is a concern because some of the smaller roads will have coatings of black ice, which can be very dangerous."
Be mindful of slick roads, especially on bridges and overpasses. Consider staying indoors rather than venturing out if possible. Bring in pets and plants.
Be careful of indoor heaters. Make sure to have proper ventilation in order to prevent fires and toxic gases from causing serious problems.
A Winter Weather Advisory is no longer in effect, but the threat of dangerous road conditions created by black ice can exist on the smaller secondary roads, so be careful.
