COLUMBIA (AP) -- A South Carolina man seeking to run for an open congressional seat as a Democrat is suing the party he wants to represent.

A federal lawsuit filed this week accuses the state Democratic Party of violating Brian Doyle's civil rights and conspiring to thwart his political ambitions by not helping him publicize his candidacy.

Chairwoman Carol Fowler did not want to comment on the lawsuit, and Doyle referred questions to an attorney.

Doyle says he is a syndicated radio talk show host.

The 3rd District seat is open as Rep. Gresham Barrett seeks the Republican nomination for governor.

Former Air Force pilot Jane Dyer of Easley is the only Democrat in the race. She was defeated by Barrett in 2008.

Four Republicans are seeking the seat.
